As many of you may have already guessed from viewing this site, I’m a huge Mario fan. I grew up playing the GBA remakes of the original Super Mario games, and I loved playing Super Mario 64 DS and New Super Mario Bros. DS on my old Nintendo DS. I played many other games as well such as the Mario Kart Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Yoshi’s Island DS, Mario Party 8 and later Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and the still recent Super Mario Bros. Wonder on my Nintendo Switch. I grew up watching the original Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario World cartoons and recently enjoyed watching the Super Mario Bros. Movie of 2023, with the new Super Mario Galaxy movie coming very soon in April of this year. So to say the least I consider myself very familiar with this series.

The Super Mario franchise is undoubtedly the most famous and successful video gaming franchise of all time. It’s also regarded as a family friendly franchise that can be enjoyed by anyone, especially children. Most people however don’t know about the rich hidden legacy of adult content in the widely popular gaming franchise. And we’re not just talking about fan-made content, though a couple will be on this list. We’re talking about actual media created by the professional artists, developers and programmers at Nintendo. This will be a deep-dive into the Mushroom Kingdom’s spicy side.

Size comparison of the main characters of the Mario series.

When I first started to write this article, I wanted to simply list the most not safe for work moments and media in relation to the Super Mario series. However, I thought that a simple listicle like you would see in Buzzfeed would be too generic, and I wanted to talk more broadly about adult media in the Mario franchise. While Nintendo is known globally as a family friendly multinational video game company based in Japan, most don’t know that there have been numerous not-so-family-friendly moments within their IPs, and the Mario series is definitely not excluded.

I always had a soft spot for the portly plumber and his friends, but always wondered if there was more going on behind the scenes that I was unaware of as an avid gamer. Recently before creating The Hidden Vault Blog, I learned about subjects such as inappropriate storyboard jams by animators such as the infamous Rugrats Incredible Storyboard Jam as well as other adult topics in the entertainment industry such as the well known Tijuana Bibles and mature animated parodies such as “Bring Me the Head of Charlie Brown” and “Uncle Walt.”

But what about the video game franchise that gave me such joy and entertainment growing up? Did the Nintendo team ever get a little too creative with the series and create adult content with official Super Mario characters? It’s a very enticing question and one where the answer isn’t very obvious. Even in this article I acknowledge that I haven’t even cracked a tiny bit of all of the potentially inappropriate portrayals of the Mario characters by Nintendo staff behind the scenes.

Mario peeing on Yoshi, which in turn involves the enemy Fryguy getting drenched in pee as well. From Super Mario-kun.

But how could I presume that Nintendo has been in the business of portraying everyone’s favorite plumber and his friends inappropriately behind the scenes? Because, as you shall see, we already have ample evidence of very weird and very adult depictions of the characters by Nintendo themselves. So the real question is not whether Nintendo has ever “done the naughty” with Mario and friends, but just how much is behind the scenes for the general public to discover. And that’s what I’m here to do in this article by discussing all of the most NSFW moments in the Mario series and why we’re just barely scratching the surface of this unique phenomenon.

While some pieces of media aren’t directly tied to or created by Nintendo themselves, such as the Super Hornio Bros films and the Mario is Missing online porn game, there does exist some evidence of not only erotic Super Mario content such as nude characters and bouncing breasts animations (they really did that) but of company staff potentially creating their own adult takes on the characters. In this latter regard, I’m talking of course about the infamous Nintendo Gigaleaks in 2020 and their aftermath which showed for the first time ever hidden adult content in the popular and memorable game Super Mario World, which included an image of a GIF of Luigi behind Bowser with the very peculiar filename SEX.CGF.

All of this has important implications not just on Nintendo but on the entertainment industry as a whole since it showcases that even family friendly companies and corporations such as Nintendo have staff and employees who engage in creating mature media of their intellectual property. In researching and discussing my findings so far, I make sure to stress my neutral point of view along with my opinions. My end goal here is not to judge the company, or any other, for producing adult depictions of their characters and property. Rather I’m merely eager to showcase my findings to the world and discuss the raw emotions and ideas expressed by them. Before we start, let’s give a brief background on the Super Mario series itself.

From Humble Mushroom Beginnings

The highly successful Super Mario series was created by legendary Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. Mario’s first appearance was in the classic arcade game Donkey Kong, released in 1981, which also marked the first appearance of Mario’s girlfriend and damsel in distress Pauline and Mario’s ongoing rival Donkey Kong himself. Miyamoto actually modeled Mario on Popeye the Sailor Man, with Donkey Kong being based on King Kong. Eventually Mario would rise to global fame with the release of Super Mario Bros., which released in 1985 on the Family Computer (often known as the Famicom) and the Nintendo Entertainment System (also known simply as the NES) to critical acclaim.

Famous video game developer and creator of Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto.

Super Mario Bros. was pivotal to the success of Nintendo during the late 1980’s into the 21st century. The game was able to sell over 40 million copies worldwide, and also helped to revive the video game industry after the disastrous events of the video game crash of 1983. Super Mario Bros. was so successful in fact that it would be the best-selling video game for almost three decades until it was overthrown by Nintendo’s own Wii Sports game for the Nintendo Wii in 2006. The great commercial and financial success of Super Mario Bros. helped to give it many sequels such as Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and more platform sequels and even 3D games starring the plump plumber. Super Mario games are generally 2D platforming games where Mario uses his ninja-like jumping abilities to save his friend (and romantic interest) Princess Peach from the nefarious reptilian monster turtle Bowser in the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario also utilizes many power-ups such as Fire Flowers and Super Stars to overcome many unusual but colorful enemies such as Goombas and Koopa Troopas. Unlike many popular games such as Call of Duty, Doom, Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat, the Super Mario series is known for its large cast of family friendly characters who can generally be put in any situation depending on the story and game, as evidenced by numerous sub-series such as the Mario Kart and Mario Party games. The Super Mario series has even been referred to as the “Mickey Mouse” of gaming with Nintendo being the “Disney” of the video game industry, and it’s not hard to see why.

The Super Mario series would eventually include numerous sub-series such as the Mario Kart series, Dr. Mario series, Mario Party series and so on while main characters in the franchise such as Donkey Kong, Yoshi and Wario would even have their own series within the greater Super Mario brand. The cast of the Mario universe include the humble yet heroic plumber himself, Mario, his sometimes cowardly but always heroic younger and taller brother Luigi, Mario’s friend and love interest Princess Peach, his best friend and dinosaur pal Yoshi, rivals Wario and Donkey Kong, his onetime love interest and friend Princess Daisy, his friend Toad and his greatest rival Bowser. Almost everyone knows Super Mario, but most people don’t know what goes on behind closed doors in the Mushroom Kingdom, and I’m here to bring you the sweet and savory details. So let’s begin.

The Fun Begins

Probably the most scandalous media related to the Super Mario franchise that many people may have heard about before. Super Hornio Brothers and Super Hornio Brothers II were two pornographic parodies of the Super Mario series developed by Buck Adams and starring Ron Jeremy, T.T. Boy and Chelsea Lynx as the main characters. The first film is actually two parts while the second film is a sequel after the events of the first film. The two pornographic parodies were actually released the same year as the 1993 live action film Super Mario Bros, which was very loosely based on the video game franchise.

After doing some…intense research into these films, they seem to also be loosely based on the Super Mario series just like the 1993 film. These films have that distinctive feel of most twentieth century porn parodies as being so over the top but also fun at the same time. Super Hornio Brothers never takes itself too seriously, and the quality of the writing as well as the props and special effects definitely give every run of the mill porn parody today a run for their money. And while I’m cautious of linking the films in this article because they are indeed very pornographic and WordPress’s policy on NSFW content frankly sucks, I can confirm that both films are actually available online -*cough* *cough* xHamster *cough* *cough*.

A short clip from the first Super Hornio Brothers movie from the Internet Archive website provided by the Something Awful (SA) website.

Just to see how wild things could get in the films, here’s a short clip of Buck Adam’s character King Pooper, a parody on the Mario villain Boswer, having a heart attack in this scene from the second Super Hornio Brothers film.

According to Wikipedia, while the original films always remained obscure novelties since their original releases, they gained some renewed interest in 2009 after the second film was rediscovered by an internet user from the American comedy website Something Awful (SA). A rip of the first film would be subsequently found in 2014 by another Something Awful user. Here is a link to the SA forum discussing the first Super Hornio Bros film: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3676585.

Super Hornio Brothers | Universal Dork

According to Ron Jeremy, Nintendo quickly acquired the distribution rights to both films so that they could never be released to the public and potentially embarrass the company. The unintended result was that Nintendo themselves actually owned not one but two pornos based on their most famous property! To this day Nintendo still has the exclusive rights to Super Hornio Brothers and its sequel, and obviously doesn’t intend to release them to the public anytime soon. However, both films remain legendary collectors’ items and have been sought by curious fans due to their nature and unusual history.

Below is a YouTube video from the popular YouTuber and internet researcher Justin Whang discussing both Super Hornio films.

And just in case you were wondering what the official theme of the Super Hornio Bros. films should be, here is an animated GIF from the website and online community YTMND (You’re the Man Now, Dog!) that answers that very sacred question.

The Real Princess Peach Game Nintendo Doesn’t Want You To Know

Mario is Missing: Peach’s Untold Tale is a pornographic parody game of the Super Mario series for Adobe Flash that starred Princess Peach trying to save Mario from Bowser’s evil forces. The game was released in 2012 by a developer named Ivan Aedler. It was very popular on the entertainment site Newgrounds, with continuous updates until the last update on April 19, 2020. Most people already know that this was when the COVID-19 pandemic was in full swing, and progress on Mario is Missing would unfortunately soon come to a screeching halt.

Talking about this game is almost tough since it has so much content not only compared to most porn games, but even most online fan games during the 2010’s. Ivan Aedler definitely gave it his all with this erotic adventure for the princess. The game starts off by having the player choosing from four characters: Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Rosalina and even Krystal from the Star Fox series.

The game had an actual cool story of Peach trying to save her best friend Mario (honestly we all know Mario and Peach have been hooking up behind the scenes at this point, and this game is just further proof but I digress) who has been unceremoniously kidnapped by Bowser’s forces, and it’s up to Peach to save Mario and become the hero in this story. Peach defeats enemies not just through traditional means of jumping on enemies or shooting them with a Fire Flower, which she can of course do in this game since she’s just that awesome, but having sex with them of course! And why wouldn’t a horny princess attempt to have sex with as many enemies as possible while she tries to save Mario?

Peach’s Untold Tale is also a rather long game compared to your average porn game. Her adventure takes around 3-6 hours to complete with many collectibles to grab along the way. It even has a world map for players to go back and keep track of. Other notable features include a gallery to view previous scenes, an outfit room for players to customize their gorgeous heroines, a keyboard configuration screen for players to help them choose their preferred means of playing the game and even an achievements tab. All of these features may seem pretty commonplace today, but they were virtually unheard of for porn games back in the 2010s, since most online porn games were either just animated movies not-so cleverly disguised as video games, one-screen hentai animations or puzzles, or just copy-and-pasted top-down RPG’s with hentai scenes or animations included. 2D action platform erotic games were also rare at this time, and are still considered a novelty to this day.

Take the game’s popular sex scenes. Those are actually interactive, as when the player touches a character, they can engage in a playable sex scene, and watch as Peach pleasures herself and her satisfied participant in a variety of diverse sexual scenarios. That’s a very unique way to implement sex in a porn game beyond “click this prompt to put a tentacle in this screaming anime’s girl’s ass!” You know those games. I would even argue in my humble opinion that Peach’s Untold Tale revolutionized the online porn game industry in ways we still have rarely seen today.

You can even customize your characters into a cute ShyGirl. What more could you ask for! *NSFW website warning when clicking on the link in the image.*

The original game was so successful that a sequel was in the works titled Mario is Missing 2: Peach’s Untold Tale. Aedler’s supporters loved the original Peach game so much that he simply couldn’t keep up with the physical demands of making yet another game on the scale of the original Mario is Missing. Things would only get worse when Nintendo would issue a DMCA on September 21, 2020, causing him to drop the project altogether. While his fans have mentioned creating a sequel to Mario is Missing after Aedler’s departure from the sequel project, only time will tell if Peach will go on another sex-filled romp through the Mushroom Kingdom. Don’t fret though because the first game is still available online in all of its sexy glory. Again because it’s a porn game and has a lot of sexual content, I can’t link to an official porn site but trust me it’s readily available online – *cough* ComDotGame/Gamcore/Games of Desire *cough*. Sorry, there must be something stuck in my throat.

Nintendo’s pursuit of legal action against Ivan Aedler’s popular game caused some controversy and negative reactions online, since many users felt that a large company such as Nintendo going after a small developer with a passion project went too far. Personally I feel for Aedler and his supporters, while also understanding Nintendo’s point of view for wanting to prevent their IP for being portrayed in a way they didn’t approve of at all. On one hand, I remember playing Mario is Missing many years ago and enjoying it. It’s just such a unique game that is so fun, it stands on its own in terms of gameplay and story even excluding the pornographic content. I will still love to see a Peach’s Untold Tale 2, whenever that could be. This game was simply a joy to play and had a great fanbase and deserves to be remembered for its unique gameplay and quality sex scenes.

A Theater Experience to Remember

One could argue that I was technically cheating with the first two Super Mario entries since they weren’t actually made by Nintendo. However, they still influenced the company in a couple of ways, with the two Super Hornio Bros films causing enough of a concern by Nintendo to acquire the exclusive rights to both porn films, and Nintendo taking legal action against Ivan Aedler’s personal masterpiece Mario is Missing, despite the game’s impressive gameplay and dedicated fanbase. The same can’t be said for Lily Franky Theater, which while also technically not made directly by Nintendo themselves, was actually commercially sold through their own products.

Shitamachi Ninjō Gekijō (partially found Nintendo-licensed virtual magazine; 1995-1996) - The Lost Media Wiki

For those not in the know, Shitamachi Ninjo Gejijo, better known as Lily Franky Theater was a virtual magazine officially licensed by Nintendo for the SNES’s/Super Famicom’s Satellaview peripheral. The Satellaview ran from 1995-2000 and Lily Franky Theater ran from 1995-1996. The magazine’s name came from its creator, Lily Franky (Masaya Nakagawa), a Japanese humorist, illustrator, writer and actor who has appeared in over 40 Japanese films since 2001.

Images of the Satellaview peripheral.

An image of Lily Franky.

There are a grand total of 98 episodes of the Lily Franky Theater magazine, with 49 live-action episodes featuring the Mario cast as plushies and 49 manga versions featuring Lily Franky himself. Most of the episodes have not been recovered unfortunately and are considered lost media, with only eight live-action episodes surviving and only one manga episode surviving.

The title card for the sixth part of the Lily Franky Theater broadcast “Kinoko Jōwa.”

Where things get interesting though is the content of the live-action Mario plushie episodes. The Mario-themed episodes are notable for having simulated adult content within them such as sexual innuendos, Princess Peach and Toad engaging in oral sex together, Mario stomping on Peach in an attempt to kill her for having sex with Toad, and Mario lighting a cigarette after already attacking the poor princess.

An image of a nude character in a sexual position behind a huge lobster, also included in the Lily Franky Theater virtual magazine.

What’s puzzling is just how Nintendo even approved of Lily Franky creating adult-themed episodes of their popular family-friendly characters. While the company discontinued Lily Franky Theater after almost a year, which may have been due to either low viewership, sexual content or both, it does stand in sharp contrast with the company’s often vigorous takedown of fan-made adult media of Mario characters such as the aforementioned Super Hornio Bros films and Mario is Missing. I know potential discussion will hinge on Nintendo’s apparent hypocrisy in allowing Lily Franky Theater while issuing DMCA takedowns against smaller artists and developers, but I think what is just as intriguing is the fact that Nintendo would even allow this virtual magazine to exist on their official platforms at all in the first place.

Mario and Friends Get Down and Dirty

So far we talked quite a bit about very pornographic material connected to the Super Mario series. But what about actual material created by the very talented employees and staff at Nintendo themselves? Well let’s start there now, and what better way to start than by showcasing the most “ballsy” advertising stunt made by Nintendo.

I’m talking of course about a little known but very infamous Super Mario Strikers poster meant to represent two soccer balls in a net as a clever metaphor for testicles. In the middle of the poster are the words “You’re Gonna Need A Pair.” This ad was made for the game Super Mario Strikers for the Nintendo Gamecube in 2005. The date of the ad itself seems to also be in 2005, as shown in small font at the bottom of the image, with the Super Mario Strikers logo on the far right. While this poster was apparently canned by Nintendo for being too provocative, it does represent a rare time Nintendo tried to be edgy and fun with the Super Mario franchise. This ad basically teases players that they need to “man up” or essentially “grow a pair” to play this more aggressive Mario game. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time that Nintendo created a very edgy advertisement for Super Mario Strikers. Check out this ad with Mario being the ultimate sports wizard tripping up other soccer players.

So we have a provocative ad, but what about an equally provocative interview with Toad? The interview I’m referring to of course is an article in issue 135 of the UK edition of Nintendo Official Magazine which discusses a joke interview involving Toad and his role in the video game industry. Notable highlights include Toad getting the part of a lifetime by being the Mushroom Retainer in Super Mario Bros., being naked along with three of the women from the 1987 NES game Wizards and Warriors in a hot tub, being depressed that Yoshi supposedly stole his role in Super Mario World (Toad is notably absent Super Mario World), throwing his pants at people after they would pass his square in Mario Party 2, and coming home from the set of Mario Party 3 to find his wife cheating on him by having sex with a Bob-Omb in their bed.

While it’s obviously meant to be a humorous reflection on Toad and his role in the Mario series, what caught my attention personally was Toad’s mention of his depression from having lost his role, and presumably a lucrative gig, in Super Mario World to Yoshi. While Toad has served as Mario and Luigi’s personal friend and companion ever since his debut in Super Mario Bros., Yoshi essentially took on that same role since Yoshi’s first appearance in Super Mario World. While not discussed in great length by Nintendo themselves, it’s apparent that Yoshi has gained more worldwide recognition as Mario and Luigi’s ally than Toad and starred in more games with the heroic plumbers. Yoshi even has his own series of games called the Yoshi Island series. The possible conflicting relationship between Toad and Yoshi is not seen too much in the games themselves or discussed by the company or staff, but apparently their tense relationship was notable enough to become a plot point in the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy movie set to be released this year, 2026, around April. Here’s a trailer with Toad notably not being a fan of Yoshi’s addition to the group. While the movie hasn’t come out yet, one can guess that this plot point will involve Toad becoming insecure about Yoshi’s inclusion in the group, and how the group struggles to resolve this ongoing conflict between the two members.

Waluigi’s Foot Fault, better known by users as Waluigi’s Toenail Clipping Party, is arguably the weirdest and most gross content in this article. It was first released in 2000 on the official website for Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64 in order to promote said game. Besides the weird content of this rare game, it’s also notable for being one of the few games to star Waluigi as the main character, and indeed Waluigi is apparently the only playable character in the game.

The game description for Waluigi’s Foot Fault states, “Grab your shears and collect a jarful of smelly toenails clipped off Walugi’s monstrous feet. The fungus is about to begin!” Apparently the game involves actually clipping and collecting Waluigi’s disgusting toenail clippings. Reportedly the player’s score goes up with how many toenail clippings they can collect. However, actual gameplay from the game has never been officially released since the files containing the game on the original Mario Tennis website have never been preserved, and thus the game is considered lost media. Issue 136 of the September 2000 issue of Nintendo Power discusses the Waluigi toenail game in their article of “Nintendo Power Online” on page 12.

This game is definitely a puzzling phenomenon since it’s unclear what it has to do with tennis in general and Mario Tennis specifically. Some Nintendo developers seemed to have had just a little too much fun with making Waluigi’s first ever game. Whoever came up with this idea, hats up to you. I would also like to state that two other games that actually involved tennis were also on the Mario Tennis website, but are also considered lost like Waluigi’s Foot Fault.

In Mario Kart Arcade GP, there exists a JPG of people running for their lives and an armed soldier taking cover during the Beslan school hostage crisis in Beslan, Russia. It’s unknown why this image was included in the game’s files in the first place, considering its depiction of people in a terrorist situation in an otherwise family-friendly game with Mario characters. I talk more about the subject in my blog post which you can access by clicking the image below.

Getting Wild in Super Mario-kun

Super Mario-kun is a manga published by Shogakukan Inc. and written by manga artist and author Yukio Sawada in November 1990. The first tankobon, a standard publishing format for books in Japan, would be released the next year in July 1991. The series spans the entirety of the Super Mario games, including the mainline games as well as the other Mario sub-series such as the Mario Party and Mario RPG games. It also has cool puzzles for readers to solve in addition to the main books. Despite being aimed at children, the manga enjoys taking many creative liberties with the Mario crew, including containing crude humor, cartoon violence, gross gags, fourth wall breaking humor and even nudity.

An example of a typical Super Mario-kun cover.

The more NSFW moments of the manga series are notable, including but not limited to the aforementioned image of Mario urinating on Yoshi and subsequently on the Fryguy as well.

What did Mr. L mean by this? : r/papermario

Images of the character Vivian from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door obsessively stalking Mario and collecting all of his things, including even his own fecal matter (shown in the bottom right of the bottom left panel by her waving hand).

A similar Mario-themed manga commonly known as KC Mario would also have some rather NSFW images of the Mario characters.

While it’s hard to make out at first, this is actually Princess Peach in a bikini as a racetrack girl. This was part of the KC Mario manga series, and links to most of the manga can be viewed in the Super Mario Boards site here: https://www.marioboards.com/threads/36335/.

The Wario manga series, Ore Dayo! Wario Dayo!!, created by the same author of the Super Mario-kun series Yukio Sawada, also contains some scandalous imagery as well.

This image below was found on Reddit but didn’t have the name of the specific Mario manga series it came from, so I left it separate from the others.

The Mushroom Kingdom Turns Up the Heat

There have been more isolated incidents of sexual content and nudity in Mario games. For this I utilized The Cutting Room Floor (TCRF) extensively. A perfect example is the popular party minigame, WarioWare, Inc. : Mega Microgames! This game is the first title in WarioWare series that stars Mario’s famous arch-rival Wario. The series is known for popularizing the concept of “microgames”, which are very short and simple minigames that the player must complete within only a few seconds and with very simple controls and contextual clues. On the TCRF website, unused graphics exist that depict Wario naked in three different poses.

That exact reason for these graphics and their purpose for the game is unclear, but it can be assumed that they didn’t make the cut in order to avoid nudity of Mario characters by Nintendo.

The critically acclaimed RPG game Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga has early sprite animation of Queen Bean squishing her breasts very provocatively. It was changed to an animation of her holding her arms together for the final release of the game.

Yet another instance of nudity with regards to the Mario cast actually doesn’t involve a Mario character at all, though his sprites are in an official Mario game. We’re talking of course about the nude Kawauso-kun sprites found in the files of Super Mario World. The discovery of these sprites originates from the Nintendo Gigaleaks of 2020. For those of us, including myself, not initially familiar with Kawauso-kun, he’s an otter-man character from the gag manga series Utsurun Desu, which ran in the Japanese publishing company Shogakukan Inc.’s seinen manga magazine Big Comic Spirits from 1989 to 1994.

Cover of the first volume Utsurun Desu featuring Kawauso-kun.

A Kawauso is also the Japanese term for river otter and is a reference to the now extinct Japanese river otter, Lutra lutra whiteleyi. Kawauso are also considered yōkai (shapeshifters) in Japanese folklore and mythology.

A better overall image of the Kawauso-kun character from the Utsurun Desu manga.

In a Super Mario World file called kawauso.CGX with a date of September 18, 1990, sprites of Kawauso-kun and Mario can be seen. Notably Kawauso-kun has a couple of sprites with his genitalia visible, with a reddish area on the tip of his penis.

Kawauso-kun’s sprites in the Super Mario World files are actually based on his appearance in his own game, Utsurun Desu: Kawauso Hawaii e Ike!!!, which was based on the Utsurun Desu manga of the same name.

Kawauso-kun jumping over a pit of spikes in the Utsurun Desu: Kawauso Hawaii e Ike!!! video game released by publisher Shogakukan Inc. for the Famicom in 1992.

Talking about Super Mario World, we would be in the wrong for not mentioning Luigi’s thumbs-up sprite in the files for that game. During development for Super Mario World, Luigi actually had a thumbs-up gesture in the file MARI-CORE-luiji released on July 19, 1993. It may have been used when either beating a level or riding Yoshi, but at first glance it does look like the friendly plumber is flipping the bird to the player. It’s possible that Nintendo saw the unintended appearance of this otherwise innocent gesture and thus cut it from the final release of the game.

We talked a lot about pornographic, vulgar and even disgusting content in Super Mario media so far, but what about blood and gore? While not a lot of very bloody Mario-related content seems to exist or have been released to the public, at least one exists so far. In the development files of Yoshi’s Safari, (one of the only two first-person shooter games in the Mario series, the other being Luigi’s Mansion Arcade), there are images of Yoshi bleeding from his nose in the file name T_YOSSY3.CGX according to TCRF.

All of the content we mentioned thus far, from the Kawauso-kun nude sprites to the bloody Yoshi nose sprites, were from the Nintendo Gigaleaks from 2020. I could make an entire article just from that alone, but because I don’t want to make this article into a novel rivaling the Odyssey, I will just briefly state that the Nintendo Gigaleaks were a truly massive, unauthorized release of confidential source code, internal data and prototypes relating to Nintendo games spanning all the way from the late 1980’s to the 2000’s. The gigaleaks were first discovered on the infamous image board 4chan in July of 2020. The Nintendo Gigaleaks were similar to the more recent Nickelodeon Gigaleaks of 2023, where about 500GB of internal data from the popular children’s entertainment company was leaked online and began circulating heavily on platforms such as Discord and Twitter.

British security researcher Zammis Clark was the individual responsible for the Nintendo Gigaleaks, having committed the data breach in March 2018 to access Nintendo’s internal servers to steal an astounding 2.54 terabytes of data. All of this data, including source codes and prototypes, would eventually be leaked to 4chan in July 2020. Clark would be given a prison sentence of 15 months in 2019 due to his infiltration of sensitive data from several companies and entities such as Nintendo, Microsoft, VTech and even the Red Star Operating System from North Korea.

Yet another image related to the Nintendo Gigaleaks involves a weird building filled with Mario characters, as well as Kirby and an unknown green-haired individual that looks like one of the Mario brothers. The origins of this image are unknown, but it shows some unusual adult content with the characters including a naked Mario. I talk more about this unusual yet intriguing image in my blog post on the subject, which you can go to by clicking on the image below.

The Most Mysterious File in Super Mario History: SEX.CGX

This last piece of media is probably the most striking, not due to the content itself, but because of the implication it brings. We’re talking of course about the SEX.CGX gif file in Super Mario World. Also uncovered during the Nintendo Gigaleak of 2020, its discovery kicked off a very minor reaction when it was found hidden in the files of Super Mario World. I talk a little about the subject in my blog post here: https://thehiddenvault.blog/2025/08/09/sex-cgx-hidden-inappropriate-sprite-file-in-super-mario-world/. While it may not look like much, there is more than meets the eye at first glance.

Firstly, SEX.CGX is notable for being official Super Mario media, unlike fan made projects like the two Super Hornio Bros films and Mario is Missing. And while it’s not confirmed that any actual Nintendo staff members made the GIF themselves, if they indeed did, then it would be a step up from Lily Franky Theater which was sold through Nintendo but made by a comedian not connected to the company. Since the file is just an image of a GIF, we unfortunately can’t see the entire GIF in action, nor can we even see the entire image of the GIF itself as it’s obscured to show only the top half of Luigi behind Bowser.

The file name itself, SEX.CGX, and the image we do see does paint an interesting picture though. The fact that Luigi is behind Bowser, looking downwards towards Bowser while Bowser himself is looking back at Luigi, along with the provocative name, suggests a sexual act occurring between the two. Again this is not 100% certain, but one can be expected to come to such a conclusion by simply viewing this image.

The art style of SEX.CGX is also somewhat reminiscent of Super Mario World itself, though it’s a slightly higher quality and doesn’t have the same art style anywhere in the game itself. The image also doesn’t seem like something that would have been on the Internet during the 1990s, nor is there any indication that it was made by a fan, though that could still be the case once more information becomes available. It’s a safe bet for now to assume that the GIF was made specifically by the artists or programmers of Super Mario World sometime during the development of the now popular SNES game. We also don’t know why they created the GIF in the first place, though possibly just to entertain themselves would be the obvious answer.

The enigmatic GIF SEX.CGX, while seemingly pale in comparison to the rest of the NSFW media mentioned so far, does present a mystery that I’m truly eager to solve. However, the biggest allure of SEX.CGX, at least to me, is the fact that we simply don’t know that much about it. How long is the GIF? Is it just a few seconds, an infinite loop, or is it several minutes long? Are there other adult-themed GIFS or images hidden in Super Mario World or even created by Nintendo staff themselves? The possibilities of this are truly enormous.

Final Thoughts

Of course our story doesn’t stop here at all. Our article clearly shows that Nintendo has a long history of creating and interacting with adult content in the Super Mario franchise, such as from attempting to stop and regulate the sale of mature-themed fan projects with Mario characters or cutting sprites deemed too inappropriate and so on. I ended on SEX.CGX because not only is there strong indication that it was actually made by Nintendo staff members, but we simply don’t know anything else about it and no one else on the internet seems to be taking it as a serious piece of Super Mario media.

This was definitely a fun and ambitious article to make. It’s my longest post yet and I hope to make more like this in the future.
