The Simpsons are without a doubt one of the most popular, if not the most popular, adult cartoon series in the world. The long running animated sitcom has the generous distinction of being referred to as OFF (Our Favorite Family), a title reserved for only the most beloved fictional family in American society. After first airing on December 17, 1989, the hilarious yet endearing yellow family has dominated American television and left a huge legacy since then, and not just in America but the world as a whole. But every family has a dark secret, and the Simpsons are no exception.
According to an excerpt from the book The Simpsons: An Uncensored Unauthorized History, produced by John Ortved in 2009, the animators of the Simpsons, not unlike the team from the infamous unreleased SpongeBob book Behind Closed Doors, had just a little too much fun when drawing and animating America’s favorite family. The text describes a contest among animators during the production of The Simpsons, which initially began as political satire but somehow devolved into creating highly inappropriate depictions of the characters.
Since I always like to make sure that my information is valid, I managed to actually buy the book on Amazon myself and find the paragraph. Please keep in mind that this book, like many others, have different versions so the page numbers won’t always be the same. But just in case you want to find the same paragraph yourself, it’s in Chapter 8 titled Bigger Than Jesus; it is approximately the 21st paragraph in the chapter and it’s also the second paragraph in the Brad Bird section after he talks about parodying George H.W. Bush with existing animation. My paperback copy just happened to have the paragraph on page 123. The images of the book and said paragraph are below.

The contest apparently was inspired by a speech made by George H.W. Bush which is sometimes referred to as the “Walton Speech.” The speech has that name since it involved Bush urging Americans to become more like the Waltons and less like the Simpsons. Enraged by this speech from the president, animators and crew members took it upon themselves to create satirical drawings of Bush, which were posted on studio walls. The contest was then escalated by the animators when they started creating pornographic and obscene images and animations of the Simpson characters. The contest presumably ended with an animation involving Grandpa Simpson having sex with Maggie. Lisa tries to break up the incest sex scene between the two family members, but her efforts are in vain when Grandpa Simpson savagely beats her.
Below is a video of former president George H.W. Bush’s speech criticizing The Simpsons and a clip from The Simpsons mentioning the speech.
If the “Walton Speech” event described in The Simpsons: An Uncensored Unauthorized History is accurate, then this is without a doubt one of the most graphic and obscene events in the franchise’s history. *Also just a quick side note but the event itself isn’t officially called “The Walton Speech Event” by anyone but I personally chose the name to describe this obscure incident. The book doesn’t mention who was involved in the animations, what specially the drawings and animations of Bush and The Simpsons characters looked like, nor any specifics about the infamous animation between Grandpa Simpson, Maggie and Lisa.
Below is a video by YouTuber Zack Stanton talking about the tense relationship between The Simpsons team and the Bush family.
